Black Jersey Giant

This breed of chicken was created mere miles from us at Dragon Way Farm in Jobstown, NJ in the late 19th century!  It is one of the largest pure breed chickens with hens weighing 11lbs and roosters 13-15lbs at maturity!  They were origionally bred to compete with commercially available turkeys at the time, but sadly fell short due to the advent of the broad breasted turkey which hit the market in the late 19th century.
 
Jersey Giants are a slow maturing, but very gentle giant.  They have a calm, quiet disposition and hens are good layers of large brown eggs.  This is a cold hardy breed that is somewhat likely to go broody.  A good choice for a family looking for either eggs or meat for the table!
